The children are staying at the home of a famous inventor who was known for her one-of-a-kind clocks. All the clocks make noise especially at midnight, when there are enough chimes, gongs, and clangs to wake the whole house up! But the clocks aren't the only sound in the house at midnight. Someone or something is making a mysterious tapping sound. Who could be inventing trouble in the old house?

The orphaned Alden family children, now living with their grandfather on his island, are intrigued by the mystery of the nearby empty yellow house. Not satisfied to leave its 40 year old story unfinished, they uncover a trail of clues that leads them to the woods of Maine.

The Aldens are spending the summer traveling on a houseboat! Throughout their journey, the children have the feeling that they're being watched.
